Commute Times: Perception vs. Reality

The asphalt lobby is making a big deal about an opinion survey that found that people in Metro Vancouver have a perception that congestion is getting worse and commute times are getting longer.

A more rigorous study that measured actual commute times found that although traffic has slowed, actual commute times have shortened in the last ten years.

Unless survey participants were keeping records, I wouldn't trust their reflections on last year's commutes. It is the kind of detail that can easily be forgotten or mis-remembered. This is especially the case if Mustel's questions are vague or leading. Unfortunately, Mustel does not provide the precise questions for this survey.
